Finavon Castle Water Salmon and Sea Trout Fishing on the River South Esk in Scotland

Gate Lodge Pool

The uppermost pool at Finavon Castle Water, and also the newest; Gate Lodge was dug out naturally by the monumental floods caused by storm Frank in the last days of December 2015. The pool was then subject to a major clearing out job to make it fishable, as it was choked by tree trunks and other assorted debris after the event.

The pool is accessed by wading underneath the middle gap of the A90 road bridge and onto the gravel island on the upstream side. Ahead of you, you will see a midriver island with lots of greenery. You must wade up the shallow channel on the left-hand side of the island, before curving round at the head of the island to fish the pool itself which lies on the island’s right-hand side (when looking upstream) The pool is not easy to fish but is worthwhile for those who take the time to make the journey to do so, as it nearly always holds fish. Please always check with the ghillie for detailed instructions before attempting to fish Gate Lodge Pool, as it is potentially unsafe in certain water conditions and permission must be given with due consideration to the prevailing conditions and abilities of the angler beforehand.
