Fishing
the pools of Finavon Castle Water
· Visiting anglers should appreciate that the South Esk, whilst
not a spate river, is dependent on good water for consistent
sport. This is particularly true in the summer months. Because
of the range of conditions at Finavon over the course of a season,
fishermen need to adapt to varying conditions. The South Esk
is a very different proposition in spate conditions than it
is in low water. This is best seen in the different approaches
and tackle required for salmon in the strong cold waters of
the Spring and Autumn, and for grlise and seatrout in low water
in the summer. Fishermen who can adapt quickly will certainly
enjoy better sport.
· We advertise the beat as fly only, although very occasionally
in spate conditions Alasdair may allow tenants to spin. There
is no bait fishing at Finavon. In the spring and autumn months
we recommend a 13' salmon rod with either a sink tip or a slow
sinking line. In cold or heavy water a Wetcel 2 can also be
very effective. Flies vary according to water temperature and
colour, and a range of flies from 3" Waddingtons to size
12 or 14 Willie Gunns or Stoat's Tails are recommended.
We have also developed our own Finavon Shrimp fly, which
does very well in the autumn.
· We recommend that anglers use chest-waders throughout the
season, except for delicate early morning or late evening low
water grilse fishing, when the angler needs to practise good
field-craft by standing as far back from the river as possible.
Polaroid glasses are always a useful aid to spotting fish in
the pools. |
